Chapter 9

“Guys, come on,” I said as I reached toward both of their guns. “Let’s be mature about this.”

“He--” Caruug began.

“If you’re about to say ‘he started it’, then don’t,” I said sternly.

The two mob bosses glared at one another as they dared the other to lower their guns first.

“This is ridiculous,” I sighed. “There are more important things happening than you two hating one another.”

“I don’t know,” Caruug hissed. “I’ve always wondered what Aarmada would look like with a bullet between the eyes.”

“Alright, that’s enough,” I said.

Before either of them could pull the trigger, I launched. I disarmed Caruug with one swift movement, chucked the gun to Baz as I spun around, and then I grabbed Aarmada’s wrist and took hold of the gun. He tightened his grip and glowered at me, but I didn’t shrivel under his gaze. Eventually, I won the contest, and he let go of the gun. I confiscated it and handed it to Baz as well. The two bosses and their staff looked somewhat stunned at my fast moves, but at least there weren’t guns being shoved in any faces now.

“That’s better,” I sighed. “Now, is there a place we can talk that isn’t so windy?”

“We’ll go to the conference room,” Caruug said calmly.

“Good,” I said. “Let’s go.”

Caruug and his second-in-command led the way back into the building. Aarmada trudged after him, followed by his goons, and Baz and I brought up the rear.

“That was close,” Baz muttered.

“And that was just them saying hello,” I sighed. “I don’t know how they haven’t killed each other already.”

“They’ve tried,” a voice said beside me, and I turned to find Caruug’s second-in-command beside me. “Believe me.”

“We haven’t officially met,” I said. “I’m Noah.”

“Merlon,” he replied.

“Fun job you have here,” I said.

“Don’t get me started,” he chuckled. “I thought working my way up the ranks was a good idea at the time, but I’d give anything to be back at my desk in deliveries.”

“Working with Caruug can’t be easy,” I said.

“My life is threatened at least once a day,” he said. “It’s a breeze.”

I chuckled quietly at that.

Caruug must have heard me because he turned back to look at us, and Merlon assumed his usual stoic facade while his boss stared at us. Eventually, Caruug turned back around, and he relaxed again.

“They’re quick to fight one another,” I said in reference to the two bosses.

“You know what siblings can be like,” Merlon sighed.

“Wait, they’re brothers?” I asked. “I guess that makes sense. I was a little confused at the fact they’re the same species, and I wondered why they have such an intense rivalry.”

“Yes, although most siblings don’t kill one another’s family and staff,” Merlon said.

“These two are two of a kind,” I replied.

“Indeed,” Merlon said. “They used to be one big company, Aarmada, but then Caruug got sick of being in his brother’s shadow, so he split off and formed A-Corp, and he took half of Aarmada’s staff with him. The ones who didn’t come with him, he killed.
